Not even a few hours after I posted some thoughts on who the Bruins could realistically hope to acquire in a Jake DeBrusk trade, Jeff Marek of Sportsnet released the following article:
Towards the end he wonders aloud about a possible Jake Debrusk for Filip Chytil trade. For those unfamiliar, Chytil is a big (6'3, 210 lb.) left shot center from the Czech Republic currently playing in the middle-6 for a very good New York Rangers team. Chytil has also spent some time on the wing during his NYR career, though he has said publicly that center is his most natural position. The Rangers drafted him in the first round, 21st overall, in 2017. If you are unfamiliar with Chytil, he is capable of doing things like this:
Despite the size and obvious skill, Chytil is a player who never really developed the way the Rangers expected. He currently sits at 4-7-11 through 36 games, though he has heated up a bit recently with 4 points in 5 games since being moved to the second line center position. I am certain the Rangers expected a player of his size, speed, and skill to be more productive.
While his stats are not eye popping, the Bruins sorely lack a young center with the size and offensive flair Chytil possesses on the organizational depth chart. Maybe you give him a shot between Taylor Hall and fellow countryman David Pastrnak to see how he fares? It would allow Nick Foligno-Erik Haula-Charlie Coyle-Oskar Steen to fight it out for a better third line mix. He has the ability to play the wing as well, so his versatility could be useful.
With David Krejci gone, Patrice Bergeron's future uncertain beyond this season, Charlie Coyle best suited for 3rd line duties, and prospects like Trent Frederic, Jack Studnicka, and John Beecher looking unlikely to amount to anything more than bottom 6 forwards, a center prospect like Chytil would be a low risk, high reward add. It also saves the Bruins 1.375 million against the cap, which could give them some much needed breathing room in order to facilitate more deals closer to the deadline.
Should the Bruins do it?: Yes.
Every day that goes by, Jake DeBrusk loses some value as a trade piece. He's currently just kinda "there" on the third line. He has shown some flashes of effort, but since the trade request it's becoming more clear that his heart is just not in Boston anymore. For an organization lacking in quality depth at the center position, Filip Chytil is the kind of home run swing that Don Sweeney should look to take. Count me in on this idea.
